After receiving tons of complaints about the new monsters, spawns, modded events, and weapons from Oblivion Lost, I had started fervently changing and removing features from Oblivion Lost that were incorporated into L.U.R.K.. After a while I realized that I, and most everyone didn't like any of the features that Oblivion Lost added.
That's why I've decided to start working on a brand new version entirely free from Oblivion Lost, while still incorporating every other feature I've made, all the balancing I've done, and all the implementations from various other mods as well as Arsenal.
Please post in the poll about your feelings on the subject. If enough people actually want the features from Oblivion Lost, then I can spend time reworking the Oblivion Lost variant.
Here are some benefits from truncating Oblivion Lost:
-Much Higher Stability, faster loading, and improved performance
-No stupid boss fights
-No Kanyhalos quality dialogues
-No retarded monster spawns
-Improved Alife from aLive mod 1.6
-Restored True Ending
-etc..

So what are the AMk features?
ReplyDelete>-No Kanyhalos quality dialogues
ReplyDeletei'm hesitant about the removal of freeplay - GSC intended to implement it into Shadow of Chernobyl with the 1.1 patch but that got scrapped for whatever reason, and Call of Pripyat is supposed to have a freeplay mode after you complete the game. is it possible to play the ending video and then jump the player back to the rookie camp in Cordon and let freeplay stalking take over from there, or is it a one-or-the-other sort of thing?
ReplyDeleteremoving the other things from OL seems like a good idea, though.
I too believe OL is something of a burden, and I can understand the desire to cut it. I'm fine with that decision as long as its better features are retained.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably planning to incorporate most of these features with or without OL, but for completeness' sake, these are the OL features I really like:
-The ability to sleep to pass time and heal wounds.
-Blowouts. These should be less frequent, though, imo.
-Dynamic anomalies. I've heard people complain of anomalies spawning right on top of them, but I've never had that happen to me. Even if it did, I'd still say dynamic anomalies are a good idea overall, they keep you on your toes and make anomalies a more appreciable threat.
-Food is necessary, but doesn't provide health.
-Many of the textures, such as HUD icons, and sounds are nice.
-The GPS beacons are a nice feature, I use them to label my stashes.
-I love the ending in which you go through the NPP, exit out the other side, fight with Monolith goons, and jump through portals. I'm not sure how this ending was attainable in the default game, but it's probably not unique to OL, either way I hope this ending will be attainable in LURK.
-I like the option to return to freeplay after the story is complete.
-I like the way the AI search bodies and drag corpses away.
-I like the OL HUD, it's simple and functional. That's not to say I wouldn't accept a replacement, but it should be similarly sharp.
[end]
Now, the things I don't like in OL, or at least wouldn't miss:
-The ability to mutate artifacts is novel, but more hassle than it's worth, both for the player to use it in-game, and for you to include it, imo.
-I can understand why most (if not all) of the mutants OL restores were cut in the first place. The 'Burer', the 'Izlom', and the Zombie are particularly stupid and I wouldn't miss those at all. The only one I like at all is the 'Chimera'. If that were to be included, however, it should be more rarer and powerful than it is in OL. Perhaps a sub-boss like the pseudogiant.
-The ability to join different factions is novel, but, again, I wouldn't miss it. There's no real way to make the player really feel like an active member of any given faction, unless a huge amount of work was put into creating new dialogue, missions, etc. I think it's better that Marked One remains a loner.
-The vehicles are a fun distraction but I wouldn't miss them. Distances aren't great in any of the maps, so vehicles are kind of unnecessary. Also, their questionable physics and the fact that the map is often hard to navigate in a vehicle further reduces their usefulness.
